The lower frets were so worn as to be notched - there was little steel left to nut the strings, and the notches lowered the action so much as to create the buzz. The fingerboard also had fingertip gouges worn into it behind the frets.
A routine heat and lift removed the frets. Before fitting the new frets I sanded and reconditioned the fingerboard, with dust putty to fill the gouges, and careful oiling (linseed and walnut) with a carnauba rub to finish.
New frets, filed to shape and comfort, file a couple of proud frets, and a new set of strings.
Ready for another decade of playing!
